JA Summer Camp
Are you looking for a fun and educational summer experience for your child? Do you want your child to learn the basics of interviewing, teamwork, and managing money?
JA Summer Camp is a five-day camp for ages 9-12. During this camp, students will interview for jobs, put together business plans, and run businesses; activities that will teach them skills they can utilize for a lifetime.
Student experiences vary from working in a bank, a television station, or a retail store, to managing personal finance, writing checks and accounting. Students realize the relationship between what they learn in school and their successful participation in a simulated economy.

Junior Achievement of Central Maryland’s summer experience is a five day event highlighting the JA BizTown facility in the morning, and components of JA More than Money and JA It’s My Business programming during the optional second session.
Monday
Students will begin the morning session by taking a look at what is important in a community. Focusing on concepts like community, leadership and work readiness, they will examine their own communities and use the JA BizTown setting to create their ideal community. After identifying important roles within the community, students will participate in a JA BizTown job fair and apply for a job in the business they feel fits them best.
In the afternoon, concepts of managing a bank account, developing a strong work ethic, and relating personal strengths to workplace success will be explored. Students will engage in group work and play the community game to further their understanding of the role that money plays in their lives.
Tuesday
Focusing on financial literacy, teamwork and work readiness, students will begin the morning session engaging in activities to learn about planning for and operating a business. Creating business plans, assembling budgets and determining inventory needs will help the students learn what they need to do to get their business customer-ready.
The afternoon session will further build on the concepts of what is needed to build a small business. Additionally, the students will learn more about the role of the consumer as they engage in role-play to learn the SMART consumer decision-making process.
Wednesday
Today, students move on to operating JA Biztown. They carry out their job responsibilities to fulfill their roles as producers, while also engaging as consumers of other JA Biztown products as they spend their earnings on their breaks. Using basic money management skills, they further develop their financial literacy awareness as they track their spending with account registers.
The Business Game kicks off the afternoon session, where students use group work to operate as a business. The concepts of using good business ethics and engaging in genuine advertising will also be discussed. Finally, students will take what they have learned about business so far and learn to apply it within an entrepreneurial framework.
Thursday
Now that students know what their businesses can do, they take it to the next level and envision how their businesses could evolve in the future as they develop another business plan. The entrepreneurial framework is explored within the context of planning for the businesses future, and students work together to determine what the best measures for future success will be.
The afternoon session begins with a renewed focus on marketing. Teaching students how to best learn about their potential market and how to develop a product or service that will best meet their needs through activities like the “E Quiz Game Show” and completing a blueprint for their ideal “Teen Club”.
Friday
The final day kicks off with the students working together to put the final touches on their business plans, including logos, product mock-ups or service descriptions, marketing ideas and pricing for their “business of the future”. They present their plans to their peers in a large group meeting, where they share their plans for their profits with a focus on philanthropic ventures.
An auction activity designed to highlight successful entrepreneurs and their businesses will kick off the final Friday afternoon session. Finally, students will learn about some social entrepreneurs and create their personalized entrepreneur profile cards.
